Your First Pay
At Summa, ensuring that you are paid competitively and accurately for what you do is a top priority. There are a few things to keep in mind relating to your first day and your first and future pay.
Exempt and Non-exempt Status
As a Summa Health System employee you will be classified as either exempt or non-exempt based on the Fair Labor Standards Act rules and regulations and the requirements of your individual position.
- Exempt employees are those who are paid on a salaried basis. If you are classified as exempt, you will not be required to clock in and out.
- Non-exempt employees are paid on an hourly basis. If you are non-exempt it is very important to clock in and out at the beginning and end of each shift. Non-exempt employees are eligible for overtime after 40 hours worked in a one week period.
Pay Frequency
Employees are paid every other Thursday for the two week period ending the preceding Saturday. If you have questions regarding when you will receive your first paycheck, please speak with your Human Resources Representative or your supervisor.
Paid Time Off (PTO)
We recognize your need to have a reasonable amount of time away from work for personal business, personal or family illness, child or eldercare issues, accidents, national holidays and vacations. Eligibility requirements and PTO schedules are listed in your Employee Handbook.
For Non-exempt Staff:
Overtime
To ensure that we meet our patients’ needs, it may be necessary for some employees to work overtime. All overtime hours must be approved by your supervisor before they are worked. Non-exempt employees are eligible for overtime after 40 hours worked in a one week period. Overtime is paid at one and one-half times your regular rate of pay as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Shift Differential
If your position requires you to work second and/or third shift, you may be eligible to receive shift differential pay. This is a fixed amount added to your base rate of pay in accordance with Summa Health System shift differential policy.
